Like Father. Unlike Son.

I doubt if he’s my son.
He’s so unlike me.
Not even a trace of my character has he inherited.
Is he ACTUALLY my son?

I heard my father say. And wondered:

How come Amir-the protagonist of the novel “The Kite Runner”- was so different from his father?
How come my short-tempered uncle- who could bash the hell out of devil at the slightest provocation- has a son who lets kids his age batter him yet not raise a finger against them?
How come my brother has such a non-violent and passive kid?
Why is Vimlesh so different from Siddheshwar Sinha- of Bhagyavidhata – a serial on Colors-his father?

How can people have children who are poles apart from their parents in character?

Why many of those who’ve been an emblem of goodness and righteousness have borne offspring that are 180 degrees their opposites.
Or vice versa.


Good guys with bad kids. And bad guys with surprisingly good ones.

It’s one of my personal mysteries of all times.

I brooded. Mulled. Pondered. And finally .Concluded.

A conclusion based on sound psychological reasons.

“Traits”- the reason. The culprit.

Psychology defines “traits” as characteristics of a personality.
Bipolar in nature they carry their opposites simultaneously. Always.

So:
Anyone who is always calm has it in him to be a demon at some time.
Anyone who is righteous in extreme can be equally unrighteous at times.
Anyone who is the epitome of faithfulness and fidelity has it in him/ her to be an infidel.

And the list can be unending.

Each of us carry within ourselves such opposite distinctiveness which go hand-in-hand all the time and are sure to manifest in different forms at different times.

So if one of your kids is like your clone the other can also be your exact opposite.
Kids are the manifestations of your characteristics and they can exhibit any pole of your traits.

So next time your doubt the legitimacy of your kid do not put an interrogation mark on your wife’s character.

Simply introspect.
Search within yourself and reflect on your traits and that of your wife’s.
Check out your own gene strain and genealogy.
And you are sure to get an answer.

Admit the trait manifestation and rest assured that your wife hasn’t erred.
